The use of chromium can be dated to weapons that were produced in the 3rd century BC, including some found in the tombs of the terracotta warriors. In fact, the chromium oxide coating on metal blades produced over two millennia ago served the same purpose as we use chromium for today: corrosion resistance. Today, the vast majority of chromium produced, whether as a metal or as a salt, ultimately ends up treating steel to make it more resilient to decay, as it does in stainless steel.
