Scandium is a rare transition metal that is generally extracted as a by-product of rare earth element refining. Extremely lightweight, scandium metal is used as an alloying element to strengthen aluminum. In its iodide form, scandium is used in halide - or mercury vapour - lamps to create a more natural light, while scandium oxide (Sc2O3) is used in specialty glass and electronic ceramics. Only a few tonnes of the element are refined worldwide each year while production of scandium metal is estimated to be less than 100 kilograms.
SMI Ltd. is able to supply scandium metal and scandium oxide (Sc2O3) in purities to 99.999% min. Please contact us with your specific requirements or for a current scandium price.
Scandium is a very light elemental metal that is often found alongside the rare earth elements. Due to it's rarity and high price, scandium does not have a lot of commercial applications...
